Lead Balustrades & Copings: Parapet Weathering Guide
Parapets, terraces and horizontal features are prone to water ingress if not properly protected. Correctly detailed lead balustrades and copings safeguard masonry and add architectural refinement. This guide explains bay sizing, drips, fixings and detailing in line with Leadwork Standards.

1. Code Selection
Code 5 lead is typically used, with Code 6 on wide copings or highly exposed sites.
2. Bay Sizing & Joints
Keep bay lengths within 1.5 m (Code 5) or 2.0 m (Code 6). Joints must include drips to shed water away from the wall face.
3. Drips & Water Shedding
Provide drips projecting at least 50 mm with sharp undercuts. This prevents water tracking back onto masonry, a common cause of staining.
4. Fixings & Substrates
Fix to timber grounds or concrete substrates using clips that allow for movement. Avoid fixing directly through the sheet, which restricts expansion and leads to splitting.
5. Balustrade Detailing
On balustrades, lead should integrate with string courses and align visually with façade features. Bossed corners and rolled edges provide a neat finish.
