1. Why Expansion Joints are Essential

Lead has a high coefficient of thermal expansion. On sunny days, sheets expand significantly. If restrained, this causes fatigue cracking. Expansion joints absorb movement, extending service life.

2. Where to Use Expansion Joints

  • Flat roofs and wide gutters over 1.5–2.0 m bay lengths
  • Large dormer roofs or parapet gutters
  • Long valley gutters in exposed locations
  • Heritage roofs where continuous sheets would otherwise crack

3. How Expansion Joints are Formed

The most common detail is a wood-cored roll, which separates adjacent bays. The roll is fixed to the substrate, with lead sheets dressed over each side. Other methods include proprietary joint systems for long runs.

4. Bay Sizing with Joints

Even with joints, bay sizes must not exceed recommended lengths. For Code 6 lead, keep bays to 1.5 m; for Code 7, 2.0 m. Joints should be placed evenly and detailed to shed water correctly.

5. Finishing & Maintenance

Apply patination oil to exposed surfaces. Inspect joints periodically to ensure rolls remain sound and fixings secure.
