  5. Geotextile underlay (to prevent lead from sticking to the roof)
  6. Copper or stainless steel clip, 50mm. 

Tools:

  1. Lead dresser and bossing stick (for shaping lead)
  2. Tin snips or lead shears (for cutting lead)
  3. Chalk line (for marking)
  4. Tape measure (for accurate measurement)
  5. Hammer (for nailing)
  6. Lead welding kit (if welding is required)

Preparation

1. Safety Measures:

  • Ensure that safety equipment such as gloves, safety glasses, and non-slip footwear is worn.
  • Use scaffolding or secure ladders to provide safe access to the roof ridge.

2. Surface Preparation:

  • Ensure the roof ridge is clean, dry, and free from any debris.
  • Inspect the underlying structure for any signs of damage or rot, repairing as necessary.

3. Measuring and Cutting Lead:

  • Measure the length of the ridge, allowing for an overlap of 150mm at each end where the lead pieces will join.
  • Cut the lead sheet to the required length using tin snips or lead shears. The width should be sufficient to cover the ridge and overlap the tiles on both sides by at least 75mm.

Installation Process

1. Laying the Underlay:

  • Place a geotextile underlay along the length of the ridge. This underlay serves as a slip layer, allowing the lead to expand and contract with temperature changes without adhering to the roof surface.

2. Forming the Lead Ridge:

  • Using the lead dresser and bossing stick, shape the lead sheet to conform to the ridge profile. The lead should be dressed neatly over the ridge to create a smooth, even surface.
  • If a traditional roll detail is required, position the wood core roll along the ridge center and dress the lead sheet over it, ensuring the lead is tight against the roll.
  • Lead sections should not exceed 1500mm, when using code 5.

3. Fixing the Lead:

  • Secure the lead sheet in place using copper or stainless steel nails. The nails should be positioned along the edges, spaced at 200-250mm intervals, and driven into the wood core rolls beneath.
  • Nails should be conceled under the laps, which should be at least 150mm between pieces. 
  • User copper or stainless steel clips at 300mm intervals to further secure the lead and prevent wind uplift.

4. Welding or Soldering (if applicable):

  • For longer ridges, multiple lead sheets may need to be joined. Overlap the sheets by at least 150mm.
  • The size of  your  laps is important,, you may also want to use lead tabls to clip the laps to mitigate wind uplift in more exposed locations. 

5. Applying Patination Oil:

  • Once the lead is securely fixed, apply patination oil to the surface. This oil helps prevent unsightly white stains caused by lead carbonate, ensuring the lead weathers evenly and maintains its appearance.

Maintenance and Inspection

Importantly, regular inspection and maintenance are vital to ensure the lead ridge detail remains in good condition. Key aspects of maintenance include:
