Chimney Aprons & Front Gutters in Lead: Installation Guide
The front face of chimneys is vulnerable to water ingress if not properly detailed. Correctly designed chimney aprons in lead provide a weatherproof barrier, working with flashings and side gutters. This guide covers code choice, overlaps, chase depths and fixings in line with Leadwork Standards.

1. Code Selection
Code 4 lead is suitable for most chimney aprons, with Code 5 used in exposed conditions. Heavier codes provide greater durability against weathering.
2. Sizing & Laps
Aprons should extend at least 150 mm up the chimney face and lap at least 150 mm over the roof covering. Joints should overlap by 100–150 mm to prevent water ingress.
3. Chase Depths & Fixings
Chase into masonry at 25 mm depth to secure the apron. Use lead wedges or stainless fixings at 450 mm centres. Avoid over-fixing, which restricts movement and leads to cracking.
4. Integration with Side & Back Gutters
The apron must lap correctly with side flashings and back gutters, forming a continuous waterproof detail. Always test overlaps with a water hose before final pointing.
5. Finishing
Point with a suitable mortar or sealant, never hard cement. Apply patination oil to reduce staining on masonry.
