Discreet but essential, lead soakers sit under each course of slate or tile at abutments and chimneys. They create a primary water path long before the visible flashing goes in. Get the size, gauge and pitch rules right, and you’ll stop wind-driven rain, protect the covering edges and give your step or cover flashing an easy job. 1) What lead soakers do
Lead soakers sit between each course of slate or tile and the abutment (wall or chimney). Each soaker turns up against the abutment and projects out over the covering immediately below. They form a staircase of miniature flashings under the visible step/cover flashing, sending water out onto the roof covering in controlled steps that resist wind-driven rain.
- Primary defence: Carry water away beneath the visible flashing.
- Wind resistance: Step geometry reduces blow-back at joints.
- Maintain gauge: Soakers match the course gauge for neat, consistent lines.
2) Gauges (codes) & when to use them
Soakers must be light enough to tuck neatly under courses, yet tough enough to resist fatigue. Most lead soakers use Code 3–4. Choose Code 3 for standard slate and many plain-tile jobs; step up to Code 4 in exposed sites, with profiled tiles, or where soakers are wider/taller than usual.

3) Soaker sizes by covering type
Soaker size is driven by the covering gauge and pitch. Every soaker needs three key dimensions: upstand against the abutment, cover width over the course below, and length along the slope to meet headlap rules.

Increase upstand and cover in severe exposure. Keep the step uniform for a neat visual under step flashings.
4) Pitch, headlap & course-by-course logic
Pitch and headlap determine soaker length. The lower the pitch, the bigger the headlap—and the longer each soaker. Always match the roof covering manufacturer’s headlap guidance; then ensure your lead soakers extend upslope beyond that headlap so water can’t back up.
General rules of thumb
- Higher pitch: Smaller headlap required → shorter soakers.
- Lower pitch: Larger headlap required → longer soakers.
- Exposure: Add a safety margin to both headlap and upstand in harsh sites.
Course-by-course set out
- One soaker per course, sized to that course’s gauge.
- Stagger joints; avoid aligning multiple seams.
- Keep soaker tails neat and consistent along the abutment line.
If the covering’s gauge changes (e.g., at eaves or dormer cheek), adjust soaker size accordingly—don’t force one size to fit all.
5) Interfaces: step vs cover flashings
Soakers work under either step flashings (individual stepped pieces) or a continuous cover flashing. The choice above the courses does not change the soaker logic below, but it affects chase lines and clip spacing.

6) Chimney cheeks & complex geometry
Chimneys add corners, saddles and back gutters. Lead soakers must transition neatly at the shoulder where the side abutment meets the back gutter, and again at the apron. Keep laps generous, tails aligned, and avoid tight folds that crack.
- Shoulder transition: Maintain headlap as the soaker line meets the back gutter; no “short” pieces.
- Back gutter: Size and fall correctly; integrate with soaker step rhythm.
- Apron interface: Keep the lowest soaker aligned with the apron’s drip zone.
For random stone stacks, pre-template a few courses to set a consistent visual rhythm before full production.
7) Materials, fixings & corrosion compatibility
Lead is noble on the galvanic series, so avoid direct contact with dissimilar metals that could corrode. Use compatible fixings and substrates, and include a purpose-made underlay to reduce friction and noise.
- Fixings: Copper or stainless clips and nails; never fix through laps.
- Underlay: Low-friction lead underlay along the abutment zone for quiet movement.
- Substrates: Sound masonry; chases ~25 mm; compatible mortar or neutral-cure sealant.
- Avoid: Bare steel contact; aggressive timber treatments; trapped bitumen edges that glue the soaker.
8) Sequencing & installation workflow
Good sequencing keeps the water path continuous and prevents accidental pinning. Here is a practical eight-step flow you can use on most abutments.
- Prepare the abutment: Cut clean, consistent chases (~25 mm) and check substrate soundness.
- Set out gauge: Mark course lines; confirm headlap for the covering and exposure.
- Cut soakers: Size per course; keep stacks organised for speed and uniformity.
- Install course-by-course: Place each soaker, maintaining upstand and cover width; no fixings through laps.
- Add covering course: Slate/tile over each soaker; verify gauge and headlap.
- Fit step/cover flashing: Insert to chase; clip at 300–450 mm; do not overpack pointing.
- Corners & saddles: Form with soft radii; avoid capillary traps.
- QA & clean down: Photograph courses and flashing lines; brush away debris; check for trapped chips.
9) Quality checks & tolerances
- Line & level: Steps consistent; flashing reveals even; tails aligned.

10) Common defects & remedies
- Blow-back leaks: Soakers too short or upstand too low.
Remedy: Increase soaker length and upstand; add margin for exposure. - Capillary tracking: Soaker edges align with troughs or tight seams.
Remedy: Re-template to bridge troughs; add welt where needed. - Creep & ripples: Laps pinned or flashing overpacked.
