Lead Flashing: Codes & Sizes
Choosing the right flashing starts with the detail and exposure. Most step and abutment flashings use Code 4, with Code 3 for soakers and Code 5 in higher exposure or longer lengths.
- Code 3 — soakers and light flashings.
- Code 4 — standard step/abutment flashings.
- Code 5 — exposed abutments and wider pieces.
Installation tips
Set chase depth correctly, use hall clips (don’t over-nail), and finish with patination oil. Follow LSTA guidance and BS 6915.

Order by Width
Pick 100–300 mm widths for step flashings and abutments; match laps and coursing to masonry.
Choose the Code
Code 4 suits most flashings; step up to Code 5 for wider or more exposed details.
Fixings & Hall Clips
Restrain flashings with hall clips in chases; use compatible copper or stainless nails where specified.
Underlay & Movement
Use the correct separating membranes and allow for thermal movement in longer runs.
Soakers
Lightweight Code 3 soakers sized to tile/slate gauge; maintain minimum lap and side cover.
Patination & Finish
Finish flashings with patination oil for clean runoff and a professional finish.
