Lead Capping to Parapet Wall – York, North Yorkshire
This project involved the supply and installation of a new lead capping to a parapet wall on a commercial property in York city centre. The main roof covering had been formed using a single ply membrane by our client, with The Lead Lads engaged to complete the specialist perimeter capping detail.
The leadwork was primarily required for visual finish and long-term weather protection. Parapet wall cappings are highly exposed details, so the finished covering had to be neat, secure and capable of resisting wind uplift while allowing natural thermal movement.
Working in central York required careful planning. To reduce time on site, the leadwork was accurately measured and prepared off site before being transported for installation and final finishing.
Why the Lead Capping Was Needed
Parapet walls are vulnerable to water penetration if the top of the wall is not properly protected. Poorly detailed cappings can allow moisture into the masonry, leading to staining, frost damage, decay and deterioration of adjoining roof finishes.
On this project, the new Code 5 lead capping provided a durable and visually appropriate finish to the perimeter wall. Continuous stainless steel clips were used to secure each edge, helping to reduce the risk of wind uplift in an exposed roof position.
Leadwork Standards and Technical Approach
This project was completed using a standards-led approach focused on correct material selection, neat panel formation and secure perimeter fixing.
- BS 6915 informed the installation and fixing principles for the lead capping.
- BS EN 12588 governed the rolled lead sheet material specification.
- Lead Sheet Association guidance informed panel sizing, welted joint formation, clipping, welding and movement allowance.
The key principle was to form a clean capping detail that could be installed efficiently on site while maintaining proper movement allowance. The lead was formed in welted panels, clipped continuously to each edge and welded at abutments where required.

- Lead panels set out and prepared off site to minimise disruption in York city centre.
- Access scaffolding arranged by the principal contractor for safe working.
- Abutment and interface areas checked before fitting the new lead capping.
- Working areas prepared for installation of clips, panels and welded details.
Substrate and Support
- Parapet wall head checked for suitability before lead installation.
- Support and fixing positions set out to suit the lead capping panels.
- Continuous edge clip locations prepared to both sides of the capping.
- Interface points coordinated with the single ply roof covering and abutment details.
Leadwork Installation
- New perimeter capping formed using Code 5 rolled lead sheet.
- Lead capping panels transported to site ready for installation.
- Welted panels formed to provide neat joints and controlled movement.
- Continuous stainless steel clips fitted to each exposed edge.
- Copper clips used where appropriate to secure the leadwork.
- Interface flashings formed to abutments where necessary.
- Welded lead details formed at abutments and changes in direction.
- Finished capping checked for alignment, edge security and visual consistency.
Finishing and Protection
- Patination oil applied to exposed lead where required.
- Completed capping inspected for fixings, welds and weathering.
- Surrounding roof areas cleaned down after installation.

What This Project Teaches About Lead Parapet Cappings
A parapet capping is a relatively simple detail, but it has an important role in protecting the wall head beneath. If the top of the wall is left exposed or poorly capped, water can enter the masonry and cause staining, frost damage and decay over time.
This project shows how off-site preparation can help when working in busy city centre locations. Accurate measuring, pre-cut panels, welted joints and continuous edge clipping allowed the leadwork to be installed efficiently while still achieving a high-quality finish.
Property Owner Takeaways
- Parapet wall heads need proper protection from rainwater.
- Code 5 lead can provide a durable and visually clean capping detail.
- Continuous edge clips help protect exposed cappings from wind uplift.
- Off-site preparation can reduce time and disruption on commercial sites.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a lead parapet capping?
A lead parapet capping is a formed lead covering that protects the top of a parapet wall from rainwater.
What code of lead is used for parapet cappings?
Code 5 lead is often suitable, depending on the width, exposure and detailing requirements.
Why are welted panels used?
Welted panels create neat joints while helping manage thermal movement across the capping.
Why use stainless steel clips?
Stainless steel clips help secure exposed capping edges and reduce the risk of wind uplift.
Can lead cappings be prepared off site?
Yes. Accurate off-site preparation can reduce installation time, especially on busy commercial sites.
Where can I buy lead capping materials?
You can explore lead roll, clips, fixings and guides through the Lead Lads Shop.
