Lead Capping to Parapet Wall – York City Centre

This project involved the installation of a new lead capping to a parapet wall on a commercial building in the heart of York’s historic city centre. The building already had a watertight single ply capping in place, but the client wanted a more traditional external finish to suit the property’s location and appearance.

York city centre contains many historic and characterful buildings, so roof details often need to be practical and visually appropriate. In this case, the new lead capping was designed to act as a traditional façade over the single ply covering below, giving the perimeter wall a more sympathetic finish.

The work was relatively small in scale, but it still required careful setting out, neat lead forming, correct clipping and attention to movement. The finished capping was formed using Code 5 rolled lead sheet with copper cleats and traditional lead detailing.

Why the Lead Capping Was Installed

This project was driven mainly by aesthetics rather than water ingress. The existing single ply detail was already watertight, but it did not provide the traditional appearance expected in such a prominent York city centre location.

Lead was used to create a more appropriate visual finish while also adding a durable protective layer to the parapet wall. A properly formed lead capping can help protect wall heads, improve the appearance of commercial rooflines and provide a long-lasting traditional finish when detailed correctly.

Leadwork Standards and Technical Approach

This project was completed using a standards-led approach focused on correct material selection, secure clipping and clean lead detailing.

• BS 6915 informed the installation principles for the lead capping detail.
• BS EN 12588 governed the rolled lead sheet material specification.
• Lead Sheet Association guidance informed bay sizing, fixing principles, welting, clipping and movement allowance.

The key principle was to form a neat lead capping that improved the appearance of the parapet without compromising the existing waterproofing below. Copper cleats were used to secure the detail while allowing the lead to move naturally.

Preparation and Removal

• Existing parapet capping detail inspected before installation.
• Single ply covering checked and retained as the waterproof layer below.
• Parapet wall dimensions measured and lead capping set out.
• Fixing positions planned to suit the perimeter detail.
• Working area prepared for installation of the new lead façade capping.

Substrate and Support

• Existing support and single ply detail checked for suitability.
• Lead capping positioned to act as a traditional facing over the existing covering.
• Edge fixing zones prepared for copper cleats.
• Movement allowance considered before final installation.

Leadwork Installation

• New capping formed using Code 5 rolled lead sheet.
• Lead panels set out to suit the parapet wall length and appearance.
• Copper cleats fitted to secure the lead without restricting movement.
• Lead welted where required to create neat panel joints.
• Lead dressed carefully over the parapet wall profile.
• Welded details formed where required at changes in direction.
• Capping installed as a traditional façade over the single ply covering below.
• Finished detail checked for alignment, edge security and visual consistency.

Finishing and Protection

• Completed capping checked for fixings, welts and finish.
• Lead dressed and cleaned down after installation.
• Finished detail inspected for appearance and weathering performance.
