01 — THE PROJECT

Forming sheet lead around a curved architectural bay

This project at Granby Road in Harrogate involved renewal of the lead weathering to a prominent projecting bay on a traditional stone property.

Unlike a simple flat bay, the roof geometry is curved and divided by raised timber rolls. The lead therefore has to follow the architectural form while remaining divided into manageable sections capable of normal thermal movement.

The completed system combines Code 5 rolled lead sheet, timber core rolls, perimeter weathering and stepped flashings at the masonry abutment to produce one coherent roof detail.

02 — THE GEOMETRY

A bay roof defined by its curve

The character of this roof comes from the projecting curved form beneath it.

Rather than trying to force a broad sheet across the complete bay, the roof is divided into individual lead sections using raised timber rolls. The rolls organise the sheet layout while allowing the covering to follow the curve in a controlled sequence.

At the rear, the roof meets the stone elevation. This introduces another important detail: the horizontal covering has to transition into stepped flashings formed into the masonry above.

03 — TECHNICAL APPROACH

Divide the curve into manageable sections

The timber rolls form the organising structure of the finished lead covering.

Each section of sheet is formed between adjacent rolls so that the curved roof can be weathered progressively rather than relying on one oversized piece of lead.

The perimeter edges, roll interfaces and masonry abutment then complete the system, restraining vulnerable parts of the covering while allowing the field of the lead to respond to normal changes in temperature.

Code 5 lead was used on this project. For another bay roof, lead code should be considered alongside the actual panel dimensions, geometry, exposure, support and movement strategy.

04 — TIMBER ROLLS

The structure behind the lead pattern

Raised timber rolls do more than create the familiar visual rhythm of traditional lead roofing.

They divide the covering into separate bays and provide a defined junction between adjacent sheets. On a curved roof, that division also makes the geometry easier to resolve by breaking the surface into manageable sections.

The lead is dressed around each roll so adjoining pieces can overlap and weather one another without unnecessarily tying the complete roof together as one sheet.

05 — MASONRY ABUTMENT

Where the bay roof meets the building

The rear edge of the bay cannot simply terminate against the stone wall.

The junction needs a separate weathering arrangement capable of protecting the transition between the horizontal roof covering and the vertical masonry.

Stepped lead flashings were formed into the masonry above the bay, with the individual pieces following the joint pattern and overlapping in sequence.

This makes the abutment an independent part of the weathering system rather than relying on sealant alone to protect the junction.

The relationship between curve and roll

The timber rolls provide the framework through which the curvature of the roof is translated into sheet lead.

Each bay follows part of the overall form, while the rolls create clear breaks between adjoining sections.

This gives the roof both its traditional architectural appearance and a practical movement strategy.

It is a good example of traditional detailing solving two problems at once: geometry and material behaviour.

The covering needs to be divided into sections capable of following the roof form without creating unnecessarily large or heavily restrained sheets.

The Granby Road bay demonstrates why a curved roof should not simply be treated as a flat roof bent into shape.

The geometry needs to influence the set-out from the beginning.
