What Is Patination Oil?

Patination oil is a protective treatment applied to the surface of newly installed lead sheet. It is normally used immediately after installation, before the lead has started to weather.

Its main purpose is to reduce the risk of white carbonate staining and lead run-off during the early weathering stage. This is particularly important where fresh lead is installed above porous or visible materials such as tiles, brickwork, render, stone, slate or paving.

How to Apply Patination Oil

• Ensure the lead is clean and dry before application.
• Use a soft cloth to apply a thin, even coat.
• Cover visible surfaces, laps, edges and clips where staining could occur.
• Do not apply to old, dirty or already weathered lead unless the product instructions specifically allow it.
• Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and safety guidance.
